Our May Newsletter failed to deliver to most subscribers so we are resending.
Apologies if you received it previously.
We were delighted with the number of parents, grandparents, friends and visitors from other schools who attended our STEM Showcase recently. Talking to the children the depth of learning in these areas was evident, as was their liking for these subjects.
The one comment repeated over and over again to us was how good the children –from Junior Infants up– were at communicating what they were doing and how mannerly and polite they were.
We began the emphasis on STEM in 2008/2009 when we built the Outdoor Classroom and converted the Science Room. We felt it important that these subjects get more emphasis as all international research was pointing out their importance. We were able to do the work mainly because of the financial support of parents.
Teachers from other schools who visited the Showcase asked how we could afford it. The answer was that we prioritised spending in these areas but mainly because of the huge and ongoing financial support of parents.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN SCOIL ÍDE
¨ 6th Classes visited the ESB Hydro-electric Station in Ardnacrusha. The power station is 90 years old and was the biggest construction project in Europe when it was built.
¨ A number of classes in the school are rearing caterpillars at the moment to study the life cycle as they progress to butterflies at which stage they will be set free.
¨ Running season is in full swing with 1st, 4th and 6th regularly using the Shannon Fields to extend their range.
¨ 4th Class Fit For Life Challenge will end at the end of the month and those completing the challenge will receive certificates in June.
¨ Standardised Testing is underway with classes from 1st up completing English and Maths tests. 1st, 3rd and 5th complete standardised spelling tests while 2nd, 4th and 6th complete standardised tests in Irish.
¨ End of year school reports will be available to all parents on the Parent Portal, accessible through www.scoilide.ie in late June. No printed copies of reports will be issued this year.
¨ Our Remembrance Mass for deceased members of the wider school community was celebrated by Fr. Derek on the 8th May. We feel it is important to remember those who have died who were part of the life of the school and its families.
¨ Lettuce, onions, potatoes and peas are the current crops in the Outdoor Classroom. The recently planted fruit bushes are progressing well. We’re moving into the time of year when the pond is enlivened by the vivid blues of the damsel flies on warm afternoons.
Early morning watering duty.
2nd CLASS SCREENING
All of our 2nd Classes will undertake on-line ability screening using a test called CAT4. (Cognitive Ability Testing). The areas tested are Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Spatial Ability. This gives us pointers as to what children’s strengths are and where they might need extra help. We then compare these ‘ability indicators’ to their attainment in Reading and Maths to ensure that children are working up to their ability levels.
2nd Class parents can get a copy of the test results by making an appointment with the class teacher or at the Parent-Teacher meeting next term.
The year spins on- YearBook Photo Time in 6th.
PARENTS’ COUNCIL TABLE QUIZ
The Annual Quiz organised by the Parents’ Council was a great success. Quizmaster for the night was Fr. Derek and the questions were drawn up by Mike McInerney. Competition was very keen and the 2 teams tied after 3 tie-break rounds. Over €2100 was raised for the school through the quiz. This will be used towards the purchase of a set of Chromebooks for use in classes.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
ASSISTANCE WITH SCHOOL BOOKS
Some limited assistance will be available for families experiencing financial difficulties in purchasing school books. We are awaiting confirmation from the Dept. Of Education of this. If you wish to apply for assistance please pick up a form outside the school office and return it no later than Friday, 12th June.
1st CLASS VIOLIN CONCERT
1st have been practising for their violin concert which took place on Tuesday 23rd May. Great credit is due to Marian, the teachers and the children for all their hard work. Many of the children are now ready to pursue individual lessons if they wish to develop further their very evident musical skills.
The Athletics season culminated in Scoil Íde with the participation in the City Sports in UL. Our teams performed very well with many outstanding individual performances. Thanks to teachers Eimear O’Doherty, Ciara Breen, Lauren Ryan, Alma Power and parent Louise Brennan for providing the coaching throughout the year.
6th CLASS FINAL ASSEMBLY
As another year draws to a close our Sixth Classes will have their Final Assembly along with their parents on Monday, 26th of June. The Final Assembly takes place at 3 p.m. in the School Hall. Invitations will be sent out to parents in the middle of June.
Many thanks to the parents who have contributed to our Maintenance Fund Appeal.
Your generosity enables us to provide a better education.
We extend our sympathies to the families of past pupils Jeffrey Ryan of Shannon Banks (Class of 2002) and Breda Minogue (Class of 1989) Listowel and formerly of Shannon Banks who died recently.
We also extend our sympathy to teachers Grace and Hilary Burke on the death of their mother, Catherine.
