STEM OPEN DAYS
We extend a warm invitation to all parents and friends to call in to our STEM Open Days on Wednesday, 10th or Thursday, 11th May. We will be displaying some of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths work that goes on in the school from Junior Infants to 6th. What we teach fits with the curriculum but adds an exciting, hands-on learning experience for children.
Research at home and abroad shows that if children haven’t been exposed to these areas before the age of 12 or 13 then they are unlikely to develop an interest and don’t take on these areas of study at later secondary school or Third Level. Experiencing these subject areas is especially important for our girls as far fewer girls engage in these areas later on in life.
We look forward to seeing you at the Open days.
Our annual Remembrance Mass is an opportunity for the school community to take time to pray for and remember past pupils, staff, parents and family members who have died. It will be celebrated on Monday, 8th May at 8 p.m. In the School Hall. All warmly welcome.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN SCOIL ÍDE
‘Why couldn’t the Pirate play cards?’
SPOTTED IN CORBALLY
We’ve been using a Trailcam in the environs of the school for the past two years but apart from the odd inquisitive Labrador and some scurrying rodents we’ve been disappointed with our return. Mr. Foley’s 6th Class regularly move the location of the Trailcam which operates on a motion sensor. They remove the SD card regularly to check for sightings of animals.
Amid great excitement in late March they found that they had recorded not one specimen of local fauna but 3. Our first sighting was a foraging badger at the edge of the cameras range. Within a couple of days the trailcam had recorded video of the Pine Marten and a preening pheasant. The following day a fox was observed taking a break in the sun by the far goalpost in the Bishop’s Field. Added to this is the regular sighting of the Kestrel hovering over the field.
It is wonderful to note such activity on the edge of the city .
4th CLASS FIT FOR LIFE CHALLENGE
Every May we ask the parents and children of our 4th Classes to undertake the Scoil Íde “Fit For Life” Challenge. Children are asked to undertake 5 periods of physical activity per week during the month and to keep a log of these. Parents or coaches are asked to sign the log. All those completing the Challenge are awarded certificates. It is especially beneficial if parents undertake some of these activities with their children such as going for a walk, cycling or swimming. We know from talking to the children how much more the children enjoy these activities if their parents are with them. Like last year we hope to conclude the Challenge with a 3k run in the Shannon Fields.
We extend our deepest sympathy to pupils Evan (6th) and Katy (3rd) and their mother Joan on the death of their father and husband John Mulligan.
Please remember them in your prayers.
