PARENT PORTAL & E PAYMENTS
Over the weeks before and after the holidays we began sending out notices to parents about the Parent Portal through which we will now communicate School Reports, test results and records of attendance.
In June when the Standardised Test results have been processed and individual pupil Report Cards finalised parents will be notified and can log on to read these. They will be accessible by parents throughout the year.
All parents should have received a text containing an access code and logged on. If phone numbers or addresses change you can update them through the portal also.
In addition we have added the option of making electronic payments and the first run on this will be the reminders of the Maintenance Fund.
Parents will still have the option of paying any of the money we collect by cash or cheque but we hope most parents will move to the ePayment option as it is more secure for everyone.
Notifications will be sent by text to parents with a link when payments are due. We hope parents will find the new system useful.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN SCOIL ÍDE
¨ The Kestrel has been regularly spotted hovering over the Bishop’s Field for the last few months. We’re glad she’s keeping the rodent population under control.
¨ Room 14 enjoyed a trip to Milano’s Restaurant recently where they learned to make pizza. They enjoyed eating the fruits of their labours too.
¨ Fourth Classes are swimming this term as part of their PE programme. We are fortunate that we don’t have to add in the cost of buses for swimming as the children can walk to Grove Island. Swimming is the only thing we teach that can save your life so it is really important that all children take part.
¨ Watch has begun for frog spawn on the pond in the Outdoor Classroom. We’re wondering if the mild weather will see it appear sooner than the normal mid-February.
¨ Junior Infants have begun work on our new STEM kits. The first one in operation involved the children in Ms. Ryan’s class building rafts to see could the rafts and objects involved stay afloat.
¨ Mr. O’Donoghue’s 5th are using the electronic Datalogger each morning to record and graph the changing light levels. It’s a great way to learn scientific terms like lux and lumens.
¨ New Maths equipment with the unusual name of IZAK9 was delivered. Ms O’Connor’s 4th are currently working on it. It has many mathematical functions but especially encourages lots of collaboration, mathematical thinking, language & explanation.
¨ The Aistear programme continues to provide very rich learning experiences for children in junior classes. The Café is the current theme in Senior Infants.
¨ Normally at this stage of the year we begin work on the next academic year’s calendar but we await the Dept. of Education circular on the standardised school year which will set most breaks for the next few years.
¨ Thanks to a combination of parental support and the payment of the DES Minor Capital Grants we could afford to replace soffit and fascia on the 8,9,10 & 11 block of classrooms. We hope with continued grant aid to replace a new block each year for the next few years. Replacing them costs very little more than re-painting.

We extend our sympathy to teacher Neil Foley on the death of his mother Joan who died just before Christmas.
Please remember them in your prayers.

RSE TALK FOR PARENTS
In preparation for teaching the sexuality element of the Relationships & Sexuality Education programme in 5th and 6th classes a talk will be held for parents of children in 5th and 6th classes on Monday, 30th January at 8 p.m. when the material to be covered will be outlined to parents.
We emphasise each year that what we teach can only be a starting point for an ongoing conversation between parents and children which should take place over the next few years.
It is vitally important to children’s well being and sense of themselves that parents continue this conversation through the teenage years.

The topic of healthy eating for both adults and children is never far from the news these days. As a school we do not have a policy in Scoil Ide about children’s lunches because while teachers constantly encourage children to choose healthy options it is beyond our power to enforce.
It is also not the job of teachers to tell children what they can or cannot eat. We also believe strongly that feeding children healthy food is a parental responsibility and duty.
A focus on school lunches also takes away attention from what children are eating the rest of the time– which is most of the time. Good eating habits start and continue at home. Reasonable advice on what is healthy food is widely available. When parents are in doubt or where their children have difficulties about food they should seek advice from those qualified to give it– that is professionally qualified nutritionists or GPs.
4th Class using ISAQ9
The first technology grants in years –which were first promised over a year ago- were announced by the Minister for Education and are due to be paid to schools in March. Much of our equipment is old and needs replacing. Thanks to your financial support along with the grants we have begun by ordering 30 laptops. Laptops are in constant use in the school and we will be looking to purchase more when the grant is actually paid. For the next purchase we are considering Chromebooks.
As well as teaching the children the skills needed in preparing documents etc. the coding language Scratch is taught formally in all classes from 2nd up. The Minister is intent on coding becoming part of the formal curriculum in all schools in the near future.
In addition we will be replacing the last 3 original Data Projectors with Short Throw Interactive Projectors in some of our 1st and 2nd Classes.
We are also pleased with the progress in 5th Classes where all the children are working on the BBC micro:bits.
As always if any parents are in a position to add to our ICT equipment through their employers generosity we’d love to hear from you.
