National Science Competition Win
Conducting Clinical Trials is not something you would normally associate with primary schools but in an effort to increase awareness of the importance of these and to promote scientific methods the Health Research Board began a national competition for primary schools. 6th Class Boland undertook a clinical trial titled ‘Does having a physical goal lead to increased participation in fitness activities and increased physical fitness’. Using clinical trial methods the class, with teacher Ray D’Arcy, beep tested 6th, 5th and 4th, surveyed their activities, retested after a period and drew up their conclusions.
The beauty of such a project from our point of view is that is exposed the children to scientific ideas, the need to have evidence to back up your conclusions and the cross curricular nature of the work. In a crowded curriculum science, P.E, maths, ICT skills, presentation skills and English were covered during the one project which interested the children.
The class was shortlisted by the HRB and invited to NUIG for a series of workshops and the award presentation. While it is nice to win a national award the exposure of the children to new learning experiences and the manner in which very serious research scientists treated the children and their work stood out for us.
The children and their teacher were interviewed by RTE and RTE Jr about their win. We are very proud of their efforts and achievement.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING IN SCOIL ÍDE
AWARD OF STEM EXCELLENCE
The huge amount of work being done in the school on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) was recognised recently when we were awarded our second DPSM Award of STEM Excellence which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland. From Junior Infants to 6th Class we have developed these areas over the last few years. Research shows that attitudes to STEM subjects are formed by the time a child finishes primary school and many children cut off a whole range of career options by age 14 by not taking some of these subjects. `
Even if someone never worked in the STEM areas our world is so STEM based that not having a basic understanding of this is like having been unable to read when Gutenberg invented the printing press– a whole world is closed to you. Thanks to our teachers who have upskilled in the STEM areas and parental financial support which enabled us to finance STEM development, Scoil Ide is very well placed to encourage children to open their eyes and minds to the world.
Special thanks to our STEM coordinator Ray D’Arcy and Science coordinator Mark Gleeson for successfully applying for the award.
ACE awards are given to pupils who excel in school life through Attainment,
Community Spirit or Effort.
Well done to our April ACEs.

Please note that dogs –no matter how cute or on leads—should not be brought onto school grounds as many children are frightened of them.
The Athletics season culminated in Scoil Íde with the participation in the City Sports in UL. Our teams performed very well with many outstanding individual performances. Thanks to teachers Ciara Breen, Carol McInerney, Lauren Ryan, Alma Power, past pupil Niamh Brennan and parent Louise Brennan for providing the coaching throughout the year.
1st CLASS VIOLIN CONCERT
1st have been practising for their violin concert which took place on Tuesday 24th May. Great credit is due to Marian, the teachers and the children for all their hard work. Many of the children are now ready to pursue individual lessons if they wish to develop further their very evident musical skills.

Friday has become Running Day in Scoil Ide as many of our classes take advantage of the beautiful surrounds of the Shannon Fields to develop their fitness. As we approach the end of term classes have set targets for themselves to attain ranging from the First Classes who are hoping to complete a 1 Km run, the 4ths are hoping to finish a 3Km run to the 6ths who will be taking part in the end of year Junior Triathlon. We are blessed with the proximity of the Shannon Fields for this and other activities. The work completed by Limerick Council on the pathways has added greatly to these facilities.
