Ms. Murphy’s 5th Class began growing crystals from alum in the autumn term as part of a national science competition. Crystals are hugely important in the world of pharmaceuticals and UL is allied with Science Foundation Ireland in promoting awareness of this in school science lessons .
Following successful growing of crystals and documenting their progress the class duly entered their crystals in the national competition and were declared winners of the primary school section.
They attended the prize-giving in UL on the 4th March picking up the trophy and an iPad for the school. Part of the prize-giving were some science demonstrations which the children greatly enjoyed.
We extend a warm invitation to the extended school community to join us for our Annual Remembrance Mass for deceased pupils, past-pupils, staff, parents and grandparents of pupils and friends of Scoil Íde. If you have suffered a bereavement during the year please join us in the Hall on
Monday, 16th May at 8 p.m.

As part of our STEM programme our 5th Classes were challenged to design and build a bottle rocket. They were also asked to keep a Learning Log of their work. Launch day proved to be very exciting and with the help of our Science Coordinator Mark Gleeson records began to tumble. Videos of some of the rocket launches can be seen on our Twitter Feed on @ScoilIde
The Champion Rocketeers were Stephen Kelly and Jack Flanagan from Mr. Butler’s 5th who set a new Scoil Ide record of 93m using a launch angle of 65° & 750 ml of water.
16 ADDITIONAL iPADS
Thanks to the generosity of parents and friends of Scoil Ide through our Raffle and other fundraising we purchased 15 additional iPads. Ms. Murphy’s 5th won an iPad in a national scientific competition. We now have 32 iPads in operation on a timetabled basis giving us the possibility of having one per child for work in classes when that is appropriate. They are used for a variety of work and we are exploring the teaching of ‘digital literacy’ with Martin Gleeson of Mary Imm. College of Education at the moment. The DES promised additional ICT funding last autumn but this might not arrive until 2017. In the meantime we continue to rely on our parents and friends to keep our ICT equipment operating and in a relatively up to date condition.
FIT FOR LIFE
Every May we ask the parents and children of our 4th Classes to undertake the Scoil Íde “Fit For Life” Challenge. Children are asked to undertake 5 periods of physical activity per week during the month and to keep a log of these. Parents or coaches are asked to sign the log. All those completing the Challenge are awarded certificates. It is especially beneficial if parents undertake some of these activities with their children such as going for a walk, cycling or swimming. We know from talking to the children how much more the children enjoy these activities if their parents are with them. Like last year we hope to conclude the Challenge with a 3k run in the Shannon Fields.
Since the dawn of time humanity has been fascinated by the stars and planets. We took the opportunity of hiring a planetarium for our 3rd and 4th Classes to develop their sense of wonder about our beautiful world and its place in the universe. Since our Hall could not accommodate the height of the Dome St. Munchin’s College kindly allowed us the use of their hall.
Exploration Dome from Killaloe provided the planetarium and the children thoroughly enjoyed the trip around our Solar System. 4th Classes will follow up with some project work on the Solar System and a Table Quiz on the topic. It might be the first step for some children to a career in astrophysics!
Routines are very important for the smooth running of schools. We again ask for parents’ support in making sure that:
We are fortunate in having the wholehearted support of so many parents and that the standards of application, attainment and behaviour are generally excellent in Scoil Íde.
